MANILA – Si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ay inimbitahan sa Washington ni Pangulong Joe Biden ng Estados Unidos.
Sinabi ni Jose Manuel Romualdez, ang Philippine Ambassador to the United States, na ibinigay ni US Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff kay Marcos ang personal na liham mula kay Biden.
Si Emhoff, asawa ni US Vice President Kamala Harris, ang nanguna sa pitong miyembro ng delegasyon mula sa Washington na dumalo sa inagurasyon ni Marcos sa National Museum Manila noong Huwebes.
Kalaunan ay nagkita sila sa Malacañang kasama ang mga opisyal ng US Embassy sa Manila.
“In that letter of course, he [Biden] congratulated the President and that he hoped to be able to speak to him again by phone sometime soon. But also, invited him to come to Washington when both their schedules would allow. So, it is really an open invitation for President Marcos to come to the White House,” wika ni Romualdez sa panayam ng One News noong Biyernes.
Sinabi ni Romualdez na ang US ay “nasa radar at ang Estados Unidos ay nasasabik na dumating si Pangulong Marcos” ngunit maaaring tumagal ng “ilang buwan” bago ito magkatotoo dahil kakailanganin ni Marcos na unahin ang mga lokal na isyu.
“And then also, it was suggested that he would travel to the Asean countries which is also part of our diplomatic efforts to introduce him formally to many of his important allies,” wika ni Romualdez.
Full immunity
Tiniyak niya na magkakaroon si Marcos ng “full diplomatic immunity” bilang pinuno ng estado sa kabila ng matagal nang contempt order na pumigil sa kanya na makapasok sa US.
“Not at all. Head of state has full diplomatic immunity. There will be no problem whatsoever,” dagdag niya.
Ipinaalam ni US Embassy Chargé d’affaires Heather Variava kay Marcos ang tungkol sa kanyang immunity pagkatapos niyang manalo noong Mayo 9 na halalan, sabi ni Romualdez.
Noong nakaraang buwan, sinabi rin ni US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman na welcome si Marcos sa US dahil sa kanyang diplomatic immunity.
Nang tanungin kung paano haharapin ni Marcos ang mga diplomatikong hamon lalo na ang mga lipunang sibil na nagpoprotesta laban sa mga isyung nakapaligid sa kanyang pamilya, sinabi ni Romualdez na tututukan ang Pangulo sa “pag-uusap tungkol sa hinaharap” sa halip na sa nakaraan.
Aniya, normal na umasa ang mga demonstrasyon laban sa mga isyu kahit sino pa ang pangulo, ngunit nagpahayag ng kumpiyansa na si Marcos ay magiging mahusay sa domestic at international scale.
“I’m very confident that he will do well because he is highly motivated. His motivation is based on the fact that he had an overwhelming mandate of 31 million people voting for him and secondly, very clearly, is because of his name. He will definitely prove himself to be worthy of being the President of the Republic of the Philippines,” wika niya.
Nakakuha si Marcos ng 31,629,783 boto o 58.77 porsyento ng mga boto.
Samantala, kinumpirma ni Romualdez na pupunta si Vice President Sara Duterte sa US bago ang United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) sa Setyembre 20.
“Before that, there is something to do with education which of course the Vice President is very much interested in because of her position also as Secretary of Education,” aniya.
