MANILA – Hiniling ng isang mambabatas nitong Lunes sa papasok na administrasyon ni President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (BBM) na ipagpatuloy ang Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) transport program upang makatulong na mabawasan ang epekto ng pagtaas ng presyo ng gasolina sa mga commuter.
Sinabi ni Camarines Sur Representative Luis Raymund Villafuerte na kinakain ng transport cost ang malaking bahagi ng kabuuang inflation rate sa Metro Manila lamang, at idinagdag na ang fare hike petition ay naihain na ng mga operator ng jeepney, transport network vehicle services (TNVS), at mga bus.
“I hope that the new administration of BBM would be able to find ways of continuing to fund the Libreng Sakay program even at least until the end of the year,” wika ni Villafuerte sa isang pahayag. “The Libreng Sakay would prove to be a big help in cushioning the impact of the fuel price shock on the commuting public.“
Sinabi ni Villafuerte na noong Mayo, bumilis ang inflation sa 4.9 porsyento, dahil sa pagtaas ng transport index ng 14.6 porsyento.
Isang PHP7-bilyong pondo ang inilaan sa Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) para sa Libreng Sakay program mula sa national budget.
Gayunman, sinabi ni LTFRB Executive Director Kristina Cassion na naubos na ng ahensya ang 80 porsiyento ng budget, dahil nagbabala siya na mauubos ang pondo sa “mga darating na araw” dahil sa pagtaas ng bilang ng public utility vehicles (PUV) na nakatala sa programa.
“We want to continue with the program na aabot pa sana hanggang December, but because (of) the number of the participants also na sumali rin sa atin kaya nagkaroon ng exhaustion of funds,” wika ni Cassion.
Si Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas, sa kanyang bahagi, ay nagsabi na ang kakulangan sa transportasyon ay isang pabigat sa kapwa manggagawa at negosyo na hindi pa mabisang natutugunan mula nang ipagpatuloy ang mga aktibidad sa ekonomiya sa bansa.
“We have workers who have spent two years struggling to survive and businesses that barely stayed open. Now that the government has allowed businesses to resume operations, our workers struggle daily to get to work on time, and then go through the same ordeal to get home to their families. When workers do not arrive on time and are too tired to work, it affects business operations as well,” wika ni Vargas.
Sinabi niya na ang pagsisikip sa mga terminal ng transportasyon at sa mga bus ay maaaring mag-ambag sa pagtaas ng mga kaso ng coronavirus disease (Covid-19) sa National Capital Region (NCR).
“The NCR is the country’s economic and business center. Any disruption in economic activities caused by a surge in cases will surely affect the economy and we cannot let that happen again,” aniya.
