MANILA – Inihayag ni Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. noong Miyerkules ng gabi na malugod na tinanggap ng Pilipinas ang mga unang Afghan refugees mula nang kontrolin ng Taliban ang Afghanistan tatlong linggo na ang nakalilipas.

“We stay steady where others waver: tonight we welcome Afghan nationals including women & kids seeking refuge. Our doors are open to those fleeing, conflict, persecution, sexual abuse and death,” sinabi niya sa isang tweet.

Gayunpaman, sinabi ni Locsin na walang karagdagang impormasyon ang ilalabas sa publiko upang maprotektahan ang kaligtasan at privacy ng mga refugee.

“The matter is closed. We’re not interested in publicity or thanks. This is done so one can look at himself in the mirror. Period,” aniya.

Ipinahayag ng Malacañang noong Agosto 17 na bukas ang mga pintuan ng Pilipinas sa mga Afghan na tumakas sa Afghanistan upang makatakas sa pamamahala ng Taliban.

Walang tiyak na quota sa bilang ng mga refugee na maaaring tanggapin ng Pilipinas ngunit dati nang sinabi ni Locsin na tatanggapin lamang ng bansa ang mga refugee batay sa gobyerno-sa-gobyerno na batayan.

“We will not entertain any request for asylum coming from NGOs, however well-meaning or reputable, or any other non-state parties,” sinabi niya sa isang tweet nitong Lunes.

“I predict that refugees will be the next lucrative order of business, having plenty of cash in hand or in foreign bank accounts. The temptation will be resistible to help them and help oneself to them. That will never happen under this administration or in my watch,” dagdag niya.
