MANILA – Ipinahayag ng Commission on Elections (Comelec) na magmumula sa iba’t ibang sektor ang mga partikular na katanungan para sa nalalapit na presidential at vice presidential debate na kanilang isasagawa.

“The debate topics were agreed upon by the Comelec. We talked about what we felt is necessary to discuss in these debates. There will be input as to the specific questions from the different sectors that we are soliciting from and we feel that will give us a better picture of what the debates will look like,” wika ni Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez sa isang online briefing.

Ito ay dahil nakatakdang ipaalam ng poll body sa mga kandidato ang mga pangkalahatang paksang tatalakayin sa mga unang debate na itinakda sa Marso 19 para sa mga kandidato sa pagkapangulo at Marso 20 para sa vice-presidential bets sa Sofitel Hotel sa Pasay City.

Ang ikalawang presidential debate ay sa Abril 3, na gaganapin din sa parehong lugar.

Sinabi ni Jimenez na walang iba pang parusa para sa mga pambansang kandidato na hindi lalahok sa mga debateng itinataguyod ng Comelec.

“First of all, mandatory participation in debates is kind of a minority situation. All over the world, for the most part, are voluntary for the candidates. In places where they are mandatory, for example, Argentina, there are legislated consequences such as forfeiture of their rights to use broadcast medium. In other countries, if you did not join the debate, you will not be allowed to broadcast television ads for example,” isinaad ni Jimenez.

Aniya, ang mga batas sa halalan sa bansa ay nag-uutos na ang mga kandidato ay maaaring gumamit ng mass media para sa kanilang kampanya.

“The e-rally is not a creation of any statute. It is an affirmative action for the part of Comelec and it is something that we feel has value and we feel should be forfeited if we feel the candidate refused to participate,” wika niya.
