MANILA – Sinabi ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte noong Lunes na ang pagsusuot ng face shield ay isang maliit na sakripisyo upang maiwasan ang isang napipintong “krisis” na dulot ng mga bagong uri ng coronavirus.

Binigyang-katwiran ni Duterte ang kanyang desisyon na panatilihin ang face shield policy, na binibigyang diin na kailangang maging mas maingat sa mas nakakahawang Delta coronavirus variant (B1617), na unang natukoy sa India.

Sinabi niya na hindi makakaya ng Pilipinas ang isa pang coronavirus outbreak dahil makakaapekto ito sa ekonomiya ng bansa.

Nabanggit din niya na ang ilang mga bakuna sa Covid-19 ay maaaring lumalaban sa bagong coronavirus variant.

“I will apologize to the Filipino people that this thing was being discussed openly and many thought that we were ready to do away with the face [shields]. But with the kind of aggressive infection that poses a very grave danger to…it’s a small inconvenience, actually. I know that it is inconvenient really to be wearing the mask, adjusting it from time to time. But that is only a very small price to pay than rather gamble with doing away with it and courting disaster,” sabi ni Duterte sa isang pulong kasama ang mga miyembro ng Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), ilang mga kasapi ng Gabinete, at mga eksperto sa medisina.

Kasunod sa payo ng mga eksperto sa kalusugan ukol sa mga hakbang laban sa Delta coronavirus strain, nagpasya siyang panatilihin ang kinakailangang regulasyon ng pagsusuot ng face shield.

“As of now, the face [shield] is on…It is to the national interest that we must triple our effort because I said we do not know if it would require a new vaccine which has to be invented first. Second, we cannot afford a second wave because it might be far worse than the first and then we will have a problem with the economy and as I said it would be disaster for the country,” idinagdag niya.

Nilinaw din niya na hindi niya kailanman ipinahayag na ang pagsusuot ng face shield ay maiaangat.

Sinabi ng Pangulo ng Senado na si Vicente Sotto III noong nakaraang linggo na sumang-ayon si Duterte na obligado lamang ang publiko na magsuot face shield kapag bumibisita sa mga ospital.

Gayunpaman, umapela ang IATF-EID na panatilihin ang panuntunan sa paggamit ng face shield sa nakapaloob na mga pampublikong lugar tulad ng mga komersyal na establisimiyento, mall, at pampublikong transportasyon.

“When I mention about the face shield, I was only shooting the breeze with the members of the Congress who were there. I never said with finality that we will do away with the face shield,” sinabi ni Duterte.

Iginiit ni Duterte na ang paggiging “mas mahigpit, ay mas mabuti” pagdating sa pag-iwas sa Covid-19.

“I’m constrained really to go back to the old practice because of this danger posed by the Delta coronavirus variant,” sinabi niya.

Sinabi ni Dr. Anna Ong-Lim ng University of the Philippines College of Medicine sa parehong pagpupulong na ipinakita sa mga pag-aaral na ang paggamit ng mga face shield, kasama ang mga face mask at physical distancing, ay maaaring magpababa ng posibilidad ng impeksyon sa Covid-19.

“Sabi po ng authors, siyempre po wala pong nag-iisang intervention na puwede pong magbigay ng buong protection, but of course pag pinagsasama-sama po natin ‘to, nakakatulong. And this is what we advise in our minimum public health standards as necessary for mitigation of transmission of Covid-19,” sinabi ni Ong-Lim.

Ayon sa IATF-EID noong Disyembre 2020, kinailangan ang paggamit ng parehong face shield at face mask sa labas ng tirahan.
