Posibleng ipasara ng pamahalaan ang mga simbahan na susuway sa ipinag-uutos ng Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Di­seases (IATF) na panatilihing sarado ang mga ito sa susunod na dalawang linggo upang mapigilan ang patuloy na pagsipa sa bilang ng Covid-19 cases.

Iginiit ni Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque na maaaring gamitin ng gobyerno ang police power nito upang ipasara ang mga simbahan. Hindi rin umano saklaw sa “separation of church and state” ang paglabag sa reso­lusyon ng IATF.

Aniya, “Ang defiance po ng IATF resolution is not covered by separation of church and state. What is covered is the freedom to believe and the freedom not to endorse a religion. Pero in the exercise of police powers, we can order the churches closed.”

Ang pahayag ni Roque ay matapos ipalabas ni Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo, Archbishop ng Maynila, ang pastoral instructions para sa pagbubukas ng mga simbahan sa Semana Santa simula Marso 24, kung saan ipatutupad aniya ang 10% capacity.

“Huwag sana pong dumating doon, Bishop Pabillo. Wala po ta­yong makakamit na kahit anong objective if you will defy and you will force the state to close the doors of the Church, wala pong paglabag sa separation between church and state if we that because that goes beyond freedom to believe and the prohibition to endorse a religion. That will be an enforcement of police po­wers po to protect the public good,” paliwanag ni Roque.
