Isang board member ng Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) ang naghikayat noong Biyernes sa Philippine media na tawagin ang pansin ng mga news outlets na nagpapakalat ng maling impormasyon at mariing siguraduhin ang fact-checking bilang kabahagi ng tungkulin nito na bigyang ng tamang impormasyon ang publiko.
“The media should be assertive enough in the discharge of its own public duty, which is to satisfy or fulfill the people’s right to know,” giit ni Vergel Santos, miyembro ng board of trustees ng CMFR.
Ito ang naging reaksyon ng beteranong mamamahayag sa huling birada ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte laban kay Pangalawang Pangulo Leni Robredo kung saan naghain ng maling paratang ang pangulo na tinanong umano ni Robredo ang kinaroroonan nito noong kasagsagan ng typhoon response. Walang inilabas na ganitong pahayag si Robredo.
Ayon kay Santos, karamihan sa Philippine media ang naging “takot” sa pag-uulat hinggil sa pangulo dahil sa chilling effect na maaari nitong maidulot matapos ang nangyaring pagpapasara ng ABS-CBN, ang pinakamalaking media network sa bansa, ilang buwan na ang nakakaraan.
Aniya, “Why? Because it is not easy to fall of the wrong side of this draconian regime. I can understand that but the problem is that we have a job to do.”
“And the job is to get the truth, so that anyone who says or propagates something other than the truth, we should call out. We should set right,” dagdag pa ni Santos.
Paulit-ulit ding tinuligsa ng pangulo ang news website na Rappler at ang pinuno nitong si Maria Ressa, pati na rin ang national broadsheet na Philippine Daily Inquirer dahil umano sa pagiging kritikal ng mga ito laban sa kanya.
Hinikayat din ni Santos ang media na ihinnto ang pag-broadcast sa mga talumpati ng mga opisyal kung nagsasabi ang mga ito ng kasinungalingan o di kaya ay nagpapahayag “nang hindi sa disenteng pamaraan.”
“The President should be allowed to say what he wishes, but even though he’s the President, this is something that should be done within the basic bounds of proper manners,” sabi ni Santos.
Hinggil naman sa bangayan ng dalawang pinakamataas na opisyal sa bansa, hinimok ni Santos ang media na magpokus sa mas malaking isyu sa halip na sa away nina Robredo at Duterte.
“We tend to fixate on smaller things. The greater question is: why are they questioning the entitlement of the Vice President? Certainly, the Vice president is more entitled than Harry Roque or Sal[vador] Panelo or [Defense] Secretary [Delfin] Lorenzana to the use of government means, especially considering the Vice President intends this for a mission of public service and desperate charity,” paglilinaw ni Santos.
Dagdag pa nito: “The larger question is: why are Mr. Duterte and his men so sensitive to the Vice President that they are so easily triggered even by things she has not done or said?”
